There are so many unknowns when you’re pregnant. There are so many unknowns during your birth experience. There are so many unknowns when you become a mother. And there is no universal guide to help you navigate through it all. You kind of just take it one day at a time and figure out what works best for you and your baby.
However, I feel like as mothers faced with so many unknowns it can feel a bit overwhelming and unconsciously stir up a pot full of fear. But, as powerful black mamas we can’t let those unknowns stir up fear inside us because fear is paralyzing. Fear can turn a calm manageable situation into a life altering emergency.
We weren’t created to live in fear. We are meant to live in freedom. And freedom is only obtained once we conquer our fears and release them from our realities. You know how good it feels after you face a fear that had a hold on you. How little the fear looks in the rear view mirror and how much more confidence you have in yourself when you defeat the very thing trying to keep you trapped.
We’ve all heard stories of the gut wrenching labor pains, the traumatic c-section recoveries, the agonizing stories of labor and delivery and the daunting sleepless nights of newborn babies. All these portrayals of other women’s stories have led to fear around pregnancy, birth and being a mother. But, these recollections are someone else’s experiences and doesn’t necessarily mean that yours will be equivalent. So, why get yourself worked up and anxious over someone else’s perceptions and experiences?
You get to choose how you deal with fear in your life. The saying “Where your mind goes, your body follows” couldn’t be further from the truth. If you allow your mind to go down the path of fear, then don’t expect your outcome to look any differently than the horror stories you’ve come across. I understand some of it may have some validity to it. But, write your own narrative and speak positivity, healing, pleasure, and strength into your story. Change your perspective so you don’t allow fear any room in your reality. Because being pregnant can be beautiful and powerful. And giving birth can be an amazing, pain free experience. And being a mother can is unlike any experience you will ever have and so rewarding in more ways than one.
What if you lived in confidence instead of fear? What if you lived in freedom instead of fear? What if your story is unlike any other? What if your birthing experience is positive? What if the newborn stages is your favorite time? What if being a mother gives you more strength and purpose, then despair and desperation?
As a powerful black mama, don’t let fear control the narrative of your story before, during and after pregnancy. Live in freedom, live in light, live in confidence, and live in peace. Don’t let the world scare you over the most amazing times of your life.
